Workshop in Pune

Dear Parents and Teachers, we are back again this year in July with a one day intensive creativity workshop !
Last year’s workshop was more about the techniques of narrating a story and performing a puppet show.

This year we are going a step further and a part of the workshop ‘Power of story’ conducted by Mr Ajit Rao is a multi dimensional tool that can be used for teacher training, therapy or simply help create an engaging story. The
other part by Dr. Mirella from Sweden using puppets to help children understand language and maths concepts.

NEERANTAR – For the continously curious child

NEERANTAR

- For the continuously curious child

Purpose: The Neem Tree is an organization aiming at infusing various
creative energies into the educational system.

The Education System involves the educator and the child who are learning.

It provides us with a curriculum and the teachers and to some extent the
parents continue the process year after year.

There are many creative people like artists , storytellers, puppeteers,
performers, filmmakers, architects , philosophists, who have different
techniques , expertise and approaches to learning.

We have moved from the Age of the the industrial revolution to the age of
innovation. At the heart of innovation is the creativity energy which is
latent in every individual. Creative influences are integral to the way we
find solutions.

Through our organization we aim at bringing them to train teachers to look
at their subject through these new methods of learning.

We also believe that every child and likewise every teacher should enjoy
the process of learning and so we intend bringing creative people from all
over and various fields of work every year through NEERANTAR.

Last year we successfully organized the Kathotsava : A storytelling
festival in Pune
.

Creative teaching and the puppet as a mediating tool.

What does it mean to teach in a creative way?
Can teachers learn to be more creative?
In which way can the use of puppet’s inspire communication and
creativity in teaching?

This workshop is a combination of theory and practice. Participants
will experience a large variation in the puppet’s ability to stimulate
children’s interest in languages, mathematics and music.

Brief Profile
Dr.Mirella Forseberg’s research is about a puppet as a mediating tool in
early childhood education and the puppet´s communicative properties,
potential and use in preschool and school. The overall aim is to
generate knowledge of the puppet’s relational, linguistic and
action-related potential as a tool for children’s communication and
learning. The research interest is focused on the content of
communicative processes where the puppet is present between the
teacher and the children and on the motives generating in the
interaction between the puppet and the children in different
activities.

Topic 2 : Mr.Ajit Rao, India

The Power of Story
Stories offer us a doorway into our inner magical world- a world in
which we come in touch with our dreams, let go of our inhibitions,
fight our demons and discover our ‘hero’ selves. Here lie the
inspirations, the divine insights, the revitalised energies to sustain
us in our day-to-day world and more importantly to nourish and
integrate our inner personalities. This workshop proposes to help us
grasp the power of story by comprehending its origins and laying out
the connections between the two worlds. These insights into the true
nature of story will enhance the effectiveness of our role as
custodians of our young children by empowering us with a revitalised
understanding of the appropriate methods of employing this most
appealing, entertaining, educative and therapeutic communication
medium- the Story.
The workshop will be of an interactive nature, inter-spread with audio
visual illustrations.

Brief Profile
Mr. Ajit Rao’s professional journey has covered diverse fields. These
include architecture, sculpture, caricature, set-designing, comic-book
art, folk art and animation. Further, an intuitive feel for teaching
has led him to share these accumulated experiences through workshops
and interactive lectures. He has headed various animation-training
programs at leading animation studios and been a visiting faculty at
premier design and architecture institutes in India besides also
conducting workshops with folk and traditional artists. Lately, Ajit
has been on a self-imposed sabbatical exploring ways of bringing these
collective understandings of diverse media of expression and
communication to the world of child pedagogy. During this workshop
titled ‘The Power of Story’ he will be sharing some aspects of his
recent discoveries.

Lakhshman’s questions for Pratham books

I conducted this storytelling session recently, with an excited bunch of kids. The story was about a boy who runs an errand for his parents and is curious about all that he sees around him. Reminded me a little of the story The Elephant’s Child by Rudyard Kipling which is one of my favourites.

Ended it with a game of Why and Because.
